Every state requires an LLC to designate a registered agent with a physical address in the formation state. You cannot form or maintain an LLC without one.

What is a registered agent?

A person or company designated to receive legal and government mail on behalf of your LLC. Every state requires one, and your registered agent’s address appears on your public formation documents.

Does every LLC need a registered agent?

Yes. Every state requires an LLC to maintain a registered agent with a physical address in the formation state. Operating without a valid registered agent can put your LLC’s good standing at risk.

Can I be my own registered agent?

Most states allow it, but it comes with tradeoffs. Your address becomes public record, you must be available at that address during business hours, and if you move you must file an update with the state. BizUp handles all of that for you.

I already have a registered agent. Can I switch to BizUp?

Yes. When you enroll in Protect, BizUp handles the transfer from your current agent. We file the paperwork with the state to update the record. You do not need to coordinate with your current agent.

What happens after the first free year?

If you formed your LLC with BizUp, registered agent service is free for the first year. After that, it continues as part of your Protect plan with no interruption. You do not need to take any action.
