Do all states require a registered agent?

Yes. Every state requires your LLC to designate a registered agent with a physical street address in that state, available during normal business hours. A P.O. box does not satisfy the requirement.

Is the first year really free?

Yes. Every formation package includes your first year of registered agent service at no extra cost. After year one, registered agent is part of a Protect subscription.

Can I be my own registered agent?

You can, if you have a physical street address in your state and are available during normal business hours. Most owners use a service instead - registered agent details become public record, which means your address does too.

What if I already have a registered agent somewhere else?

You can switch to BizUp when you enroll in Protect. We handle the transfer.

What happens after the first year?

Registered agent renews as part of a Protect subscription. Protect also includes annual report filing, compliance monitoring, and alerts so nothing slips through.

What documents does a registered agent receive?
